Roam Bounty Program #019 – $5000
Overview
Roam is a research lab building its first social product: a mobile game builder that lets anyone create multiplayer games in minutes. We run targeted bounties to solve complex technical challenges that unlock scalability and extensibility in our stack.
Problem Statement
Procedural texture generation is a critical capability for scalable world-building. Current text-to-image models can produce high-quality outputs, but they often fail at one of the most important requirements: perfect seamless tiling across any style and resolution.
We need a system that:
- Generates Textures in Any Style: Realistic, stylized, cartoon, hand-drawn, and more.
- Produces Seamless Results: Automatically applies algorithmic post-processing and cropping to guarantee tiling.
- Validates Outputs: Auto-detects failures and rejects non-tiling textures before serving them to users.
- Scales to 4K: Maintains performance and memory efficiency for resolutions up to 4096x4096.
- Supports Randomized Blending: Ensures generated textures can be tiled using obfuscation/randomization techniques (reference: MIT seamless tiling algorithm).
Context and References
Style Agnosticism
The model should not be biased toward a single aesthetic. It must handle:
- Realistic textures (stone, wood, fabric, metal).
- Stylized/cartoon textures (cel-shaded, painterly).
- Hand-drawn or sketch-like styles.
- Abstract or algorithmic surfaces.
